"Star-Forming Dwarf Galaxies in Groups"

3:00 pm Saturday 18th August In the Dining Hall

(Time to be confirmed)

"We have discovered a new type of galaxy group with very active star formation. Usually, groups of galaxies have low star formation rates because there is not much fuel available to form stars. The observed high rates of star formation in our groups could be explained by the dwarf galaxies forming out of matter torn from the giant galaxies by tidal interactions. I am testing how important this tidal process is in forming dwarf galaxies, using a relatively new type of instrument (integral field spectrograph) on a relatively old telescope (ANU 2.3m at Siding Spring Observatory). In my talk I will explain how integral field spectroscopy gives us 3D maps of these galaxies and allows us to test whether or not they are forming by tidal interactions."

Sarah Sweet is a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland. Her research interests include star formation in dwarf galaxies, and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies.

Queensland Astrofest "World Class":

The Queensland Astrofest was rated in the Top Ten Star Party in the world by The Sky at Night magazine in their May 2007 issue. A two-page spread maps out the location of camps such as the Texas Star Party (USA), Starfest (Canada), Equinox Star Party (UK) and the South Pacific Star Party (Australia).

On Friday morning 5th of August 2005 at around 2:00 am (AEST), using equipment he constructed for this purpose, Renato Langersek contacted the International Space Station and STS 114 (Discovery) as they passed over South-East Queensland and the Queensland Astrofest. Listen to an mp3 of his conversation with Andy Thomas (1.8 Mb) and view the transcript.

The Queensland Astrofest has served the amateur astronomical community since 1993,
and is currently organised by five clubs in South-East Queensland
